The second period: (1832-1852) In 1832 the park and all Potocki's properties as it was mentioned above, were confiscated and handed over to Kyiv state chamber; from 1836 the park was under the jurisdiction of the Department of military settlements. A new name of the park appeared in the literature, namely, Tsarina's Garden (Queen's Garden); there no official documents of its renaming though.

The park changed comparing to what L.Metzel had done from the very beginning of its construction. In 1833 Sadova Street was cut through and it connected the park and the city; in 1838 the Main alley was widened and paved. At the same time water was piped from the center of the park to the Main Entrance. In 1844 two towers in Gothic style were built. In 1841 the "Mushroom" and Chinese pergolas were constructed. In 1842-1845 the Flora Pavilion was built based on the project of architect Rapponet. In 1843-45 the Pink Pavilion was constructed on the island of Anti-Circe. During this time the busts of T.Kostiushko and the statue of Y.Poniatovsky were removed from the park. In 1847 tsar Nicholas I visited the park, after his visit in 1850-52 Flora and Pink Pavilions and two towers near the entrance were rebuilt according to the project of A.I.Shtakenshneider. Apollo's Grotto was covered with ground and the obelisk "Eagle" was installed on the Terrace of Muses.

T.Themery mentions the names of gardeners who took care of the par: K.Ferre, who created a beautiful terrace on the bank of Upper Pond (1840) and the Terrace of Muses on the northern bank near the Hippocrene's spring, and Bosse, who opened a far-remote view from the amphitheatre on Upper Pond, having cut the tops of some trees.

The 3rd period: (1859-1929). On the 30th of March 1859 according to the tsar's decree the park was given to the Main School of Horticulture, the school was moved from Odessa to Uman. At that time the park still had the name of Tsarina's Garden, but by the tsar decree the park got the name "Uman garden of the Main School of Horticulture". V.V.Pashkevych created the so-called English park. Sanitary and care felling of the trees was done. The park was on the decline.

The 4th period: (1929-1955) According to the Resolution of People's committee of the UkrSSR N26/630 of 18.05.29 "Sofiivka" became the reserve (the park was called a garden of the 3rd International from 1923). A greenhouse, a hotbed and part of the park were under supervision of present Agricultural Academy. The park got its independent status and till 1955 it was subordinate to various departments such as People's Commissar, department of reserves, department of architecture, which were established at the Council of people's commissars of former UkrSSR. In 1945 the park was given its full name - Uman State reserve "Sofiyivka". In 1946 the Council of Ministers adopted a special resolution "About restoration and improvement of Uman state reserve "Sofiivka". 1-mln rubles were assigned for repairing and restoration of the park. In 1948 a general plan of restoration and development of the reserve "Sofiyivka" was adopted and approved. In 1949 an ornamental nursery was organized on the area of 20 hectares. During this period small architectural forms, a road-alley system and several statues in the park were repaired and restored. The inventory of woody and shrub species was done, scientific works about the history of the park, its dendroflora and statues, small architectural forms were published. Unfortunately, the originals of marble statues of Apollo, Venus, and Mercury were lost; the park possesses copies made in organic glass; as to the statue of Cupid and the bust of S.Trembetski they disappeared; much later marble wings of the Cupid statue were found, now they are kept in the museum.

The 5th period: (1955-1980) On the 26th of September 1955 according to resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine N1184 a dendroreserve "Sofiyivka" was transferred to the system of the Academy of Science of Ukraine and was subordinate (had to report to) in its research work to the Central Botanicals Garden of Ukraine's AS.

Since the 23rd of January 1991 "Sofiyivka" has been given the status of an independent institution of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine. A lot has been done concerning restoration, reconstruction, renewal and widening the territory of the park. In 1958 according to the resolution of Cherkasy regional council "Sofiyivka" received 6,19 hectares of land out of the lands belonging Uman Public Works Department and 9,5 hectares of the territory of Uman Agricultural Institute. The history of "Sofiyivka" was widely studied during all these years, also how the park became a research institution, called upon doing all kinds of restoration and maintenance work based on scientific grounds, as well as saving its historical authenticity. The staff of the park was increased mostly due to a scientific department according to 1836 data, when the largest volume of work had been done there. 5,1 hectares which had belonged to a military unit before, were added to "Sofiyivka" in 1972. It was then that all wooden steps were replaced by granite ones, which caused a disturbance of the integrity of the parterre amphitheatre as the park's composition, because instead of having serpentine roads, the area was crossed by granite steps from "Seven-Stream" fountain to the greenhouse of the Agricultural Institute. A capital repair with the substitution of a granite base was done. A tracery metal fence (instead of a wooden fence with brick columns) with granite columns was built at the Main Entrance. In 1974 according to a project of E.Lopushinska the source "Silver Springs" was constructed on the Main Alley. At the same time the roads were paved all the way from the Main Entrance to the Agricultural Institute. A flowerbed situated near Flora Pavilion was also removed. A well-developed alley with floodgates and granite steps were created all across the area from the bridge near the island of Anti-Circe to the dam in International Street.

In the history of foundation, construction and development of "Sofiyivka" we distinguish six different periods throughout the years.

  1. 1796-1831. The Foundation.
  2. 1831-1859. The Tsarina's garden.

  4. 1929-1955. The State Reserve.
  5. 1955-1980. The Academy of Science.
  6. 1980 till present.
